James was born at Redcar - a small Fishing Village on the North Yorkshire coastline - in the month of June 1765, he was the first of eight children from the marriage of James Fleck and Margaret Cook; sister of Captain James Cook.
His Baptism was was held at St. Germain's Church on Wednesday the 12th of June 1765, in the neighbouring Parish of Marske-by-the-Sea.
He married Margaret Rountree, by Licence, at the Parish Church of Kirby in Cleveland on Tuesday the 4th of February 1794; two children only - William born 20th December 1795, and Elizabeth Cook Fleck born June 1797 - resulted from this marriage as Margaret died in 1798.
A Tombstone was erected on the west side of the St. Germain's Church yard, Marske-by-the-Sea, following her death; her Epitaph reads:

To the Memory of Margaret, Wife
of James, who died in 1798,
Aged 26.
