DESCENDANT OF CAPTAIN COOK
A Descendant of Captain Cook's sister has joined Sutherland Shire Historical Society.
Mr Sidney Fleck presented to the society a large framed coloured lithograph of 1870 depicting the landing of Lt James Cook at Kurnell and a Sydney Street guide of 1912.
Captain Cook's sister was Margaret Cook who married a Redcar fisherman, John Fleck in 1764.
They had a son, Thomas, who married in 1799. He had a son, John, who married and had a son Cropton Cook Fleck.
Cropton arrived in Australia in 1856 and married an Irish girl in St. James Church, Sydney.
They had six children.
On child was Edwin Sidney, who married in 1899. Society member, Sidney Fleck, is Edwin's son.
Despite his famous seafaring ancestor, Mr Fleck has only a slight interest in the sea; he spent all his working life with the NSW Railways.
