John was born during the year of 1818 at Sherburn, Co. Durham, Eng., his Father, Ralph was a Farmer (no record exists of his Mother). The 1841 Census shows him living with his Master in Nicholson Street Sunderland, his occupation is listed as a Draper.
He married Isabella Barker Fleck on Wednesday the 18th of December, 1844, the 2nd Child of John & Isabella (nee Cropton) at St. Michael's Church, Bishopwearmouth, Co. Durham, by Licence issued by Rich Skipsey Vicar, and witnessed by John Cropton (Snr & Jnr), Eliza Gibson & Mary Brack Cropton (Cousin).
Six Children were born during the first 13 years of their Marriage, John James, William, Charles, Isabella, Ann & Clara.
The Census of Bishopwearmouth 1851 records them living in a House at 10 Frederick Street together with their 3 Children, a Draper Assistant a House Servant and a Nurse - his Wife's Brother, James Cropton Fleck, a Mariner of Monkwearmouth was living with them.
Ten years later the Census of 1861 shows him as a Master's Draper employing three Men and a Apprentice at a House & Shop at 111 High Street with their five youngest Children a Servant and a Nurse.
