Mr. Carlen was born in Sunderland, England. His family sailed from England and settled in Oakland when he was 15. He lived in Twain Harte for the past 27 years.

A self-made builder, he was a superintendent of construction of liberty ships during World War II. After the war, he built one of San Francisco's stalwart companies, Carlen Construction Co.

He and his wife, Elinor, were married in 1938 in St. James Church in Oakland.

An avid sportsman, he played soccer and cricket and was an owner of the Oakland Clippers soccer team.

He was also a fisherman and enjoyed annual family camping trips to the Sierra Nevada and other places. He and his wife visited family in Great Britain and New Zealand, as well as traveling to Hawaii and Australia.

He was a master Mason and a Shriner, active in scouting and in his children's education.

In 1975 he moved from his 25-year home in Oakland's Haddon-Hill area to a new home in Twain Harte, where he continued his service in Masonry and the Shrine as well as utilizing his building experience to assist on area projects.

His family said his daily walks for the newspaper with the family dogs earned him the name "The Dog Man."

They said on these walks he had a smile and wave for everyone.

He was a member of Eastbelt-Tuolumne Lodge No. 8, Stockton Scottish Rite Bodies, Mother Lode Shrine Club, Mother Lode Masonic Luncheon Club and Aahmes Shrine Club.

Mr. Carlen is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elinor Carlen of Twain Harte; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Cedric and Debbie Carlen of Dickerson, Texas, Douglas and Stacey Carlen of Twain Harte and Keith Carlen of Ione; a daughter, Eileen Carlen of Twain Harte; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Bostock of Santa Rosa; a brother, Richard Carlen of Alameda; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends throughout California, Nevada, Great Britain and New Zealand.
