Hugh was the sixth and last child born to Elizabeth Cook (nee Batts) and Captain James Cook, he was born Thursday the 23rd of May 1776 - the same year that his Father set forth from Plymouth on his third and fatal voyage - at their Home at Mile End, Old Town, London.
Two months after Hugh had entered at Christ's College, Cambridge, he was attacked by Scarlet Fever and died on the 21st of December 1793.
He was buried in the center aisle of St. Andrew's Church, Cambridge, with his Brother, James.
Following the death of his Mother a Monument was erected within the Church to perpetuate the memory of Captain James Cook and their Children, Hugh's epitaph reads:-

of Mr. Hugh Cook, of Christ's College, Cambridge,
who died on the 21st of December, 1793, aged 17 years.
