Cyril Sunderland was born in the Village of Haydonton on the south side of Murrurundi, New South Wales, on Saturday 24th of July, 1902. On leaving School he commenced work on with the N. S. W. Government Railways as an Apprentice Fitter, on Probation, the 6th of May, 1918, on a Wage of 10 Shillings a Week at Eveleigh Locomotive Workshops. Following completion of his Apprenticeship on 17th of November, 1923 he secured employement on a temporary basis as a Fitter at Broadmeadow Workshops on the 17th of October, 1924.
His Services were dispensed with on the 1st of November the same year, ten days later he was re-employed, On Probation, at Werris Creek as a Fitter, with Permancy being granted on the 10th of May, 1925, his Wage then was 2 Shillings & 4.3/8 Pence per Hour.
Cyril married Juanita Margaret Hochkins at St. John's Church, Glebe, on Saturday the 24th of April, 1926 - The Service was conducted by Frederick William Tugwell, Church of England Clergyman, and Witnessed by James H Grace and Jessie E. L. Hochkins (Mother of the Bride) They left Werris Creek and moved to Thirroul, where Cyril took up duty as a Fitter on 15 February, 1927, at the Railway Running Sheds. It was here that their three Children were born, Juanita Marie on Wednesday the 13th of July, 1927; Donald Bruce on Wednesday the 11th of September, 1929, and Douglas Neil on Tuesday, 6th of December,1932. The Family moved during July, 1934. to Glenreagh where Cyril took up duty on the 23rd of August as the Fitter-in-Charge, on Probation, on a Yearly Salary of 348 Pounds per Annum.
He was Regressed to Fitter on the 4th of June, 1935, and transferred to the Running Sheds at Enfield on the 28th of June the same year. On the 5th of December, 1938, he was Promoted to Asst. Steam Shed Inspector at The Rock, 375 Pounds per Annum; and on the 1st of August 1939, he was transferred to Narrandera.
Four Years later he was promoted again, this time to Asst. District Locomotive Engineer (Class 2), on the 6th of May, 1943.
He transferred to Harden on the 25th of June, 1946, and three days later as D.L.E. (Class 1), then to D.L.E. (Senior Class) at Dubbo on 27th February, 1947.
Then it was back to Werris Creek, that he left as a Fitter in 1926, this time as District Locomotive Engineer (Chief Class) on 1st of December, 1950.
On the 8th March, 1951, the Family moved once more, where Cyril was Promoted to Assistant to the District Locomotive Engineer at Wickham vice Mr. Brown, on probation for 6 Months.
He received promotion once more to District Loco. Engineer, Special Class, at Broadmeadow on the 29th October, 1954.
Four years later, on the 1st January, 1958, he took up Duty at the Divisional Locomotive Superintendant at Goulburn, in Charge of all Locomotive movements between Moss Vale and the Victorian Border. Remaining there until his Retirement on the 20th of July, 1967.
He purchased his first Home at 32 Cowmeadow Road, Mt. Hutton, for for himself and his Wife, Juanita, and settled down to retirememt. It was short lived as he died there on the 14th December, 1971.
