Hazel, my Mum, known to her friends as 'Vicky', was born on the 20th of September, 1907, at Short Street, Marrickville, to Amy Ada Vickery, (nee James), her Father was George Edward Vickery a Storeman and Wool Classer of Wilcox & Mofflin, Mount Street, Sydney.
The family left Marrickville during 1910 and moved to Railway Parade Kogarah, a short distance from Derby Street, they moved again in 1911 around the corner into Derby Street, opposite the Derby Street Theatre that also substituted as a Roller Rink.
During the year of 1913 the family moved to Margate Street, Ramsgate close to Ramsgate Road; it was from here, that Hazel first attended School - money was scarce and she and her elder brothers had to walk to Kogarah Public School, a distance of about 3 Miles.
The Family were forced to move again to a House in High Street, Carlton, on the right hand side just down from Ethel Street, as they could not afford the rent.
Hazel left School following her birthday in 1920, at the age of 13, and started work at a Baby's Shoe Factory, at the bottom end of Willison Road, Carlton, run by a Mrs. Warren, packing Shoes.
Times were hard and the Family had to move again this time to Mill Street, Carlton, down towards the Railway Line; their stay was but short as the House was too damp, so they moved a little further up Mill Street alongside the Methodist Church.
Hazel worked at the Factory for about 6 months, realising the money was not good enough she left and started work as a Sales Girl at a Crockery Shop in Princes Highway, Rockdale, owned by a family of German Jews called Izenberg.
Four months later she was working at a Wollen Mill, spinning Wool onto Looms, on the western side of Redfern Railway Station. Approx. 9 months later she was working as a Sales Girl at Fay's Shoe Store at the corner of Liverpool and Pitt Street, remaining in this job for over two years.
Her next position was at Horden Bros situated at the lower end of George Street, Sydney, for about 5 months.
The family were on the move again, this time to the corner of Guinea and Taylor Streets, Kogarah.
Sick of selling it was time to try something new at the Lindeman's Wine Cellars in George Street, where she was employed sticking Labels onto bottles of Wine and packing them into boxes.
Fifteen months later, during 1927, it was off to Mastertouch, City Road, were she was employed checking and packing Music Rolls prior to sale.
On the 19th of January, 1929 she married Clarence Wilfred Fleck, the Ceremony being conducted by the Officiating Congregational Minister,at Kogarah Congregational Church, witnessed by Albert Percy Wright and Annie Isabel Paris - Certificate of Marriage No. C 269041 - duly signed by both sets of Parents: Edwin Sydney Fleck, Steam Train Driver Step Mother, Sarah Charlton, and George Edward Vickery, Storeman and her Mother Amy Ada James.
Their first home was a semi-detached house in Forest Road, Arncliffe diagonally across the road from the Fire Station, with splendid views out the back over Botany Bay.
The moved during the 1930's to another semi-detached house at the bottom end of Willison Street, Carlton, between Grantham and Hill St On the 21st of February, 1931, their one and only child, Rodney Clarence Fleck was born at Private Hospital in Short Street, Carlton, run by Nurse Bladen.
During 1938 they left Carlton and moved to 739 Forest Road, Bexley, on the corner of Waratah Street.
